Battery Materials From Trees Are The Best Solution To Reduce The Use Of Fossil Fuels

Battery materials from trees are the best solution to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Can trees be a solution for more environmentally friendly battery production?.

Lignin, a polymer found in trees, might be able to replace the anode of batteries, which are currently still mostly produced using fossil fuels. There are already several companies trying to explore the potential of this lignin. One of them is Stora Enso, a paper manufacturing company in Finland.

This company is one of the largest private forest owners in the world. The company initially sought to find new revenue loopholes due to the increasing trend of working in paperless offices. It was only then that engineers came up with the new idea that lignin could be extracted from pulp waste and processed to make carbon materials for batteries.

The company wants electric vehicles to be charged in 8 minutes with this lignin-based anode. The company plans to launch production of these batteries as early as 2025.
