Israel Forcibly Closed The Al Jazeera News Agency In East Jerusalem

Israel forcibly closed the Al Jazeera news agency in East Jerusalem on the week of May 5 2024. This can be seen from video footage released by Israel’s communications minister Slomoari, by directly raiding the office with the police.

During the raid, a number of broadcast equipment was also confiscated, as well as reading the order to close Al Jazeera’s offices directly. The order to close foreign news agencies includes confiscating broadcasting equipment, preventing broadcasts, channel reports and blocking their websites.

This is believed to be a first for Israel. Israel accuses the Al Jazeera news agency in east Jerusalem of being the target of Hamas. Many of the news it broadcasts are about Hamas’s resistance to Israel. This step occurred when ceasefire negotiations mediated by Doha with Hamas in Cairo did not go smoothly.

Apart from that, this is also related to the increasing long-term feud between broadcasters and the hardline government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Earlier on the same day Israel had also ordered the closure of local news agencies.
